Open Design School
Background
1. Open Design School: Aims to amplify and enhance the reach of Design Innovation Education to a large number of aspirants through MOOCs, blended learning mode, and the integration of open-source AI tools that support real-time learning and doubt-solving.
2. How ODS was working before going independent?
- prof contact Swayam platform for uploading their courses
- Swayam platform takes up courses of the professors to upload in their platform
- Publish prof courses in their platform
- students take test and earn certification
Note:
SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) is a Government of India–initiated online learning platform that provides free, high-quality courses from school to postgraduate level.
It enables professors from recognized institutions to upload courses, which are then reviewed, hosted, and managed centrally. Students across the country can enroll, learn online, take assessments, and earn certifications—making quality education accessible, scalable, and standardized nationwide.

The Problem
1. Problems even before taking up the route of Swayam platform
- Classrooms are becoming overcrowded as the number of design aspirants rises.
- Poor student–teacher ratios limit effective learning and feedback.
- Traditional design education is expensive and often accessible only to a select few.
- Learners today seek flexible, lifelong learning opportunities beyond formal education.
- There is a need for a scalable blended learning model to reach diverse learners and make design education more inclusive.
2. Problems after taking up the route of Swayam Platform
- The urge of going independent without any approvals
- delays in back and forth communication between two different organization
- Lack of implementation of AI tools on Swayam Platform
- Lack of community driven approach in Swayam Platform
The Solution
To create a platform where the business-level goals of the Open Design School likely aims to achieve through its platform:
1. Increase Awareness & Reach
ODS wants to reach a larger and more diverse community of learners across India by clearly communicating its mission and value.
2. Make Design Education More Inclusive
Expand access to design knowledge for students, professionals, educators, and beginners—regardless of background or location.
3. Improve Course Enrollment & Engagement
Encourage more users to explore and enroll in MOOCs like “Understanding Design,” “Innovation by Design,” etc.
4. Build Credibility & Trust
Showcase the IIT Bombay association, faculty expertise, and real student outcomes to strengthen the brand.
5. Simplify the User Journey
Reduce confusion and friction on the website so users can quickly understand what ODSAi offers and how to start learning.
6. Support Blended Learning Adoption
Promote the hybrid model (MOOCs + hands-on learning) and help learners understand the structure and benefits.
7. Strengthen Institutional Partnerships
Attract schools, colleges, and educators who might adopt or promote ODSAi courses in their curriculum.
8 . Integrate open-source AI tools
(Penpot, OpenWebUI) to make the platform more interactive, collaborative, and future-focused.
Design Strategy of Open Design School
1. Community-First Foundation
Designing learning as a shared experience
- Peer learning & collaboration
- Community-led meetups, design jams & mentorship
- Learning with and from others, not in isolation
2. AI-Powered Enablement tools
Democratizing access to design education
- Open-source tools in one ecosystem
- AI-powered guidance through DesignGPT
- Affordable, beginner-friendly learning paths
3. Accessibility & Trust by Design
Built from the ground up for inclusivity
- Platform built from scratch
- Mobile-first & accessible for Indian learners
- Transparency backed by educator experience
Impact
Note: Our Website is under production and not live yet, meanwhile you can see our version 1 of the landing page here
The initiative is currently in a closed development phase, where early impact has been validated through internal testing and pilot engagement. Initial feedback indicates strong usability, learning adoption, and satisfaction among early users. The next phase focuses on scaling access to a broader audience while maintaining quality, accessibility, and measurable learning outcomes.
Reflection
- Iteration is continuous: This project reinforced that iteration is an ongoing process. Even at advanced stages of design, revisiting and refining decisions is essential to adapt to evolving requirements and improve outcomes.
- Designing with brand intent: I learned the importance of translating brand values into a cohesive visual identity. Establishing a strong, consistent brand language for Open Design School helped reinforce trust, clarity, and recognition across the platform.
- Bridging design and development: Presenting design decisions clearly to developers was a critical part of the process. By articulating the why behind each choice and aligning on constraints early, I ensured smoother collaboration and minimized gaps between design intent and technical implementation.
